911 code blue.....

BERRY! Help! Leaves all turning red....I must have done something wrong. I added those pine needles from my 30 foot pine trees and I think that could be the problem. I've been researching and I think I have a nitrogen deficiency??? I went into the garage and pulled out a bag of organic blood meal, removed the pine needles from around the plants and sprinkled about 1/4 cup blood meal all around each plant and watered thoroughly...Oh my goodness, I hope I haven't killed my blueberries :(

Well, we'll just have to see what happens. I'll be praying for the green leaves to return, please join me. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

Going to bed very sad....visions of fresh picked blueberries on my oatmeal fading into the night....

  1. As I said in another post, soil testing. Repeating, soil testing. And, again, soil testing.

You are scrambling, but not sure of the object of the search. Only when you know what you have for soil, can you make an intelligent move toward remedy. As of now, you don't know your problem, or even if you have one.

  2. Well, I have done soil testing before thru the extention office in Washington Pa. It does take a few weeks to get results, so that was out, and the soil tests you purchase from a hardware store are not very accurate. So, my strategery (I know, I don't think that is a word) was to identify the tell tale signs of certain deficiancies in the soil and work from there. Green leaves on blueberry bushes turning red in fall is fine, turning red in spring however is a sign that the soil is lacking a nutrient. Either not enough acidity or lack of nitrogen in soil. I added peat moss and aluminum sulfate so that provided some acidity. I then added the pine needles loaded with bird droppings (had no choice in that)and I think that might have stifled the nitrogen? I'm checking frequently today to see if there is any change in color of leaves. Thanks for the reminder. I think I could have taken more time to prepare soil way before putting them in.
